34th Toshima Noh Performance

Noh performances by leading Noh performers associated with Toshima-ku
This Noh production features performances by leading artists in the world of Noh. This year we present two works based on the theme oni (ogre/demon)—the Noh play Adachigahara and the Kyogen play Kubihiki—as well as a performance of a short Kyogen dance by “Living National Treasure” Man Nakamura. In this magical realm, you’ll experience the joys and sorrows with which Japanese have since ancient times imbued the profoundly mysterious figure oni.

Profile
Yoshimasa Kanze
Noh artist, Kanze School shite-kata actor
Studying with his father, the third-generation Noh master Yoshiyuki Kanze, Yoshimasa Kanze made his stage debut at the age of two and a half. Based at the theatre Yarai Nohgakudo in Kagurazaka, Tokyo, he has performed in many productions inside and outside Japan. He also teaches students throughout the country. As director of the Nohgaku Performers’ Association, he is committed to the promotion and dissemination of Noh as an art form. Kanze also produces numerous performances outside the Noh theatre, creating productions combining Noh with other genres such as Kabuki and classical music. He has been performing in the Toshima Noh Performance since 1992. In 2020, Kanze received the Toshima-ku Cultural Honor Award. He is director of the Kanze Kyukokai and Nohgaku Performers’ Association. Yoshimasa Kanze was named an Important Cultural Asset of Japan (general designation).
