A zine is a handmade, personalized publication: each one is different because the creator is different. The Riso Zine Studio is a place for individual creativity: people of all ages can drop in, make their own zines, and then exchange what they made with other people’s zines. After its previous appearances at the 2019 and 2020 editions of Festival/Tokyo, which generated 1,294 different zines, this popular project is back for a third time. In addition to a studio space temporarily open in Toshima as well as a “mobile studio” roaming the city on a truck, the project is partnering with libraries and junior high and high school facilities in Toshima. Zine stands appear at public facilities and bookstores not just in Toshima but nationwide, transforming the project into a platform for people throughout Japan to exchange and enjoy zines. In this way, it offers anyone the chance to express themselves and encounter a rich range of zines.
Schedule
Thursdays, Fridays: 3:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m. (reception closes at 8:00 p.m.)
Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays: 11:00 a.m.–7 p.m. (reception closes at 6:30 p.m.)

The festival will take photographs and video for publicity and documentary purposes.
As well as being published in the festival report and on the official website, images will be used in a wide range of public relations activities.

Entry fee
Free to make up to 2 copies of an A4 single sheet or bifold zine (1 zine per person per day)
After preparing the manuscript, the zines are printed and then later displayed at the stand locations.
You can print zines for a fee at the Riso Zine Studio and collect them at a later date.
If you would like your manuscript returned to you, it can be picked up at the Riso Zine Studio.

How to Take Part
You can take part in this project at the main Riso Zine Studio and Zine Stand, or at the Pop-up Zine Stand and Pop-up Print Truck that will appear at various locations around Toshima and nationwide.
A4 (single sheet)
A4 (bifold)
Prepare the manuscript for the zine you want to make. Then hand it in at the Riso Zine Studio or post it to the studio from the Zine Stand. A few days later, your Risograph-printed zine will be on display at the Zine Stand.
The project aims to provide a platform for self-expression and sharing and exchanging with others. Zines are only available while stocks last.
Entry to the Riso Zine Studio may be restricted to avoid crowding.
●Photography
The festival will take photographs and video for publicity and documentary purposes. These may be used in the festival report or on the festival website. Please also be aware that photographs and video may be taken as part of media coverage of the festival.
Bookings
If you wish to make a zine at the Riso Zine Studio (Otsuka), please use the booking site below to book your preferred date and time.
Bookings will close once the maximum capacity has been reached.
Bookings can be made at the venue’s reception desk on the day if any spaces are still available.
There is no need to book if you do not wish to prepare your zine at the venue. You may prepare your zine manuscript at home or another location of your choosing in advance and then bring it to the venue.

Available Zines
① A4 (single sheet, bifold) (up to 2)
Free for 1 per person per day. After your zine is printed, it will be put on display at the Zine Stand. If you would like to take your zine home, you can print it out for a fee at the Riso Zine Studio. If you would like your manuscript returned to you, pick it up from the Riso Zine Studio.
② Make a Zine in a Group
You can make a page for free in a group zine. The content should follow a certain theme that is fixed for each zine.

③ Other
You can make A3 zines and print three or more editions of your zine at the Riso Zine Studio in Otsuka for a fee.
*Entry may be restricted to avoid crowding.
*Printed zines can be collected at a later date.
How to Make Your Zine
① Decide the format
*Zine templates can be downloaded from the “How to Take Part” section further up the page.
② Prepare your manuscript
Prepare the manuscript for the zine by writing the text, drawing pictures, and making collages with photos. You can do this at home in advance.
③ Decide the color
Decide the color (black, red, blue, yellow, or fluorescent pink).
④ Hand in the manuscript
Take your manuscript to the Riso Zine Studio or post it to the studio from the Zine Stand.
Your manuscript will be printed by a Risograph at the studio.
⑥ Display your zine
Display your zine at the standYour completed zine will be put on display at the Zine Stand. Visit the stand to see the zines that everyone has made.

Workshops and Events
Program in Partnership with Libraries: Our Library
Using your book selections to create the Our Library zine.
1. Think of someone to whom you would like to give a book
2. Choose a book from the library
3. Fill in the template. Write it in the form of a letter to someone!
4. Print your letter on the Risograph to create a zine.
Choose a book at the library, write a letter to the person to whom you want to recommend it, and then post your zine in the special zine post box at the library. You will find letter templates at the library, too. We will compile the letters collected during the participation period to create the Our Library zine, to serve as a kind of personalized library guide for each of the three participating libraries.

Our Library on the Road
The Our Library project to collect letters about your book selections and use them to make a zine is planned by Aramahoshi Books. For two days only, Aramahoshi Books will also be playing the part of a participant and writing their own letters about their book recommendations. Program in Partnership with the Junior High and High School Student Center JUMP: Workshop “Let’s Make a Zine: My fav, Society, and Me”
Zine-making workshops for junior and senior high school students will be held at the Higashi-Ikebukuro and Nagasaki branches of Junior High and High School Student Center JUMP. The theme will be “My fav, Society, and Me.” This is your chance to express your worries and ideas through the medium of a zine and build connections between yourself and society.
*This workshop is for junior and senior high school students in Toshima-ku only.

Hand Saw Press
Hand Saw Press is a DIY space equipped with a Risograph printing press and woodworking tools. Launched by three people with different backgrounds and specialties—architect Shinsuke Kanno (AM-A-LAB), spatial designer Ryoko Ando (design musica), and restaurant owner and editor Akinobu Oda (map/Nagi Shokudo)—there are currently two locations (Tokyo and Kyoto). By opening up a place and tools to the community through making zines, printing posters and art books, and DIY, Hand Saw Press brings people, the city, and the world together.

Takuo Miyanaga
Born in Tokyo in 1981, Takuo Miyanaga is producer of the theatre company mamagoto. He also runs the (temporarily closed) mamagoto Cafe. Miyanaga launched mamagoto with playwright/director Yukio Shiba in 2009. Since then his main activity has been creating and producing the company’s productions. In recent years he has been working energetically on theatrical creation/projects that focus on relationships among places, people and time. In 2019 he relocated to Shodo Island in Kagawa prefecture, and he currently divides his time between the island and Tokyo. Following the launch of mamagoto Cafe on Shodo Island, Miyanaga hopes to open an inn and a library there. He also plans to become a taxi driver (create taxi plays) on the island in 2022.
YUKI
Bike messenger / Traffic god
After graduating from Musashino Art University and working as a designer, YUKI became a bike messenger in 2005. She has won bike messenger races around the world and came second in the main race of the Cycle Messenger World Championships in 2009. She has raced 3,000 km around Europe and served as director for the Uber calendar. She also runs the fashion brand Traffic god.

Aramahoshi Books
A project focused on enjoying the little connections we make through books, with an emphasis on choosing, lending, and making. The group is composed of three people who appreciate books from a variety of angles: director and editor Ejiri, book designer Kotagiri, and book director Nakamura Sora. Based at their rental library in the Nishiogu district of Arakawa-ku, they hold workshops and book selection events at places including Kyoto and Tottori. They also publish the magazine Ono-ono [Each of Us] for the individuals with whom they engage in dialogue.

Satoko Miyakoshi
Designer. Principally handles editorial and graphic design work, including for Music Magazine, Akkogorilla’s album “GRRRLISM,” Women in Battle: 150 Years of fighting for freedom, equality and sisterhood, BL Textbook, and Taiko Genron [More Speech]. Editor and designer of the feminist zine NEW ERA Ladies.
super-KIKI
Adopts a DIY approach to highlighting political and social problems through the medium of placards, banners, graphics, apparel, and selfies. Designed the logo and flyers for Waifu, a group campaigning to stop discrimination against transgender people. Participated in Encounter - Infinite Variety of Faces (2021) at Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, among other exhibitions. At these workshops, super-KIKI will be providing support for Satoko.
