A passion play of solidarity and revolution for the twenty-first century

The playwright and director Milo Rau has used theatre to confront actual events and incidents. Also active in cinema and journalism, he has now created a new gospel for the twenty-first century. Set in Matera in southern Italy, where Pasolini and Gibson also shot their famous films about Jesus, the role of Christ is played by the Cameroonian political activist Yvan Sagnet. On Matera’s farms, many migrants live and work in inhumane conditions. The film captures the “Revolt of Dignity,” a human rights campaign led by Sagnet and the disciples he finds among the migrants on the plantations. This story of Christ performed by professionals and non-professional actors alike is a passion play that sharply probes society today and our humanity.
