Why Do We Need Performing Arts Now? ―Closer, Slower, And More Tolerant
Though routinely regarded as unproductive or purposeless, the performing arts could prove useful in a post-coronavirus society. In this symposium we look carefully at this issue from a variety of perspectives including the economic, the political, the biological and the aesthetic.
There is a need to change from a system reliant on unrenewable fuels to one that is aware of the limits of man as a living creature; from a rational society in which many people aim for the same goal, to a tolerant society in which people with different goals can happily co-exist. The coronavirus crisis has made us the more keenly aware of the need for such a change of direction. Though considered unproductive or purposeless for the last half century or more, the performing arts could prove useful in a post-coronavirus society.
In this symposium we will use a variety of perspectives including the economic, the political, the biological and the aesthetic to look carefully at why the performing arts are needed now.
