"Life and death. The sacred and the profane. Handed down in through the generations in an unbroken line, this tale tracing a lengthy series of twists and turns still sheds light on life today. "

Premiered in 2019. Revived just a year later, this musical enabling the audience to slip through space and time is the result of an outstanding partnership combining the unparalleled musical and theatrical talents of playwright, director, and musician Yukinosuke Itoi, with Kinoshita-Kabuki, a company attracting growing attention for its efforts to bring kabuki to the stage in ways that appeal to contemporary audiences. Featuring a fresh cast and newly written additional material and music that further advances the story and explores it in greater depth, it is set to become a must-see as the definitive version of the production!

It reinterprets the play Sesshu Gappo-ga-Tsuji, which depicts the tragedy of family relationships and hinges on a man and a woman at the mercy of fate. Also shedding fresh light on elements including Yoroboshi, the Noh play in which this tale is said to have its origins, and the sutra ballad Shintokumaru, this production is a portrayal on a magnificent scale of life laid bare.

Profile

Supervised, revised, and adapted by Yuichi Kinoshita.
Founder of Kinoshita-Kabuki. Born in Wakayama City in 1985. After hearing Kamigata Rakugo as a third-year elementary school student, he began teaching himself rakugo and went on to study contemporary performing arts while broadening his interest in classical theatre. In 2006, he founded Kinoshita-Kabuki, staging updated versions of classical plays that he himself revises and supervises. His most renowned productions include Musume Dojoji, Kurozuka, a full-length production of Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan, The Love Suicides at Amijima, and Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura and Tokaiya / Daimotunoura. His 2015 revival of Sannin Kichisa was nominated for a Yomiuri Theatre Award for productions in the first half of 2015, while his 2016 staging of Kanjincho earned him the FY2016 Agency for Cultural Affairs New Artist Award. In FY2019, he won the Encouragement Award in the 38th Kyoto Prefecture Culture Prize. He is also involved in a diverse array of other activities, including working as a writer and educator on the traditional performing arts, and worked on revisions to the Shibuya Cocoon Kabuki production of Kirare Yosa in 2018. He was an FY2017 recipient of the Kyoto City Arts and Culture Special Encouragement Grant.

Director, stage adaptation writer, composer: Yukinosuke Itoi
Born in Tokyo in 1977. Playwright, director, and musician. He is in charge of all lyrics, production, music, and art for FUKAIPRODUCE-hagoromo, the group he launched with actress Junko Fukai in 2004. He has won plaudits for his ear-catching original compositions and for the world conjured up by his unique poetic works, in a style of his own devising that he has dubbed “myojikaru” (a portmanteau of the Japanese words for “bizarre” and “musical”), which blends music and theatre in a way that sees the performers spend about 70% of their time on stage singing and dancing. He won the prize in the theatre category of the FY2008 Setagaya Art Award “HISHOU.” In addition, FUKAIPRODUCE-hagoromo’s 22nd performance Shunkan Konen (2017) was shortlisted for the 62nd Kishida Prize for Drama. He is a lecturer at Tama Art University and a Senior Fellow of the Saison Foundation. With Kinoshita-Kabuki, he has directed and composed the music for the 2015 premiere of The Love Suicides at Amijima and for its 2017 revival, which had a repertory residence at Rohm Theatre Kyoto.
