In the latter half of the 1800s, when Japan transitioned from the Edo to the Meiji period, both politics and culture went through a period of immense transformation. Regardless of their status, people saw the values that had held sway until then undergo a 180-degree change. While comically depicting how they perceived and accepted those changes, this play portrays the dynamism of the age and people’s tremendous energy as they wrestle with the dramatic universal themes of life and sex.

Satoru Jitsunashi
Director and actor. Born in Kyoto in 1964. Launched the theatre company tsumazuki no ishi in 1992. As well as leading the company and directing and appearing in its productions, his activities as an actor and director include productions for both SIS company and the New National Theatre, Tokyo. His major directorial works include Kaze Hakase, Shinihata, Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, Oran Tojo, and Kansu Domino (Mathematical Domino).
He has also appeared on stage in such productions as Osei Tojo, Line (Kokkyo) no Muko, and Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san (Yaji and Kita: The Midnight Pilgrims).

Sakurako Akino
Playwright and actor. As an actor, she performs under the name Kaori Yamagata. Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1963. In 2005, she launched Hagoromo1011 with Misa Watanabe of Aoni Production, taking charge of writing duties (and taking Sakurako Akino as her pen name). The two women established a reputation for performances that find pathos amid slapstick. In 2010, she took a detour off the path of comedy with the play Saru, which was inspired by 20th-century Japanese authors. As a result, she won the 16th Japan Playwrights Association Outstanding New Playwright Award. In 2012, she launched the Suikato theatre troupe with Yuko Matsumoto and Miyoko Okuyama from the Bungeiza theatre company, and now creates tales set in the 20th century that vividly depict men and women’s experiences of life and sex, and the desires that lie beyond them. She also supplies scripts for productions across a variety of genres, including for other theatre companies, producer-led plays, online dramas, and film scripts. She is a member of the Japan Playwrights Association.
