Can someone stay solo in a crowd?A new and long-awaited version finally appeares after two time cancellations during the pandemic

A dance work by akakilike leader Midori Kurata. In addition to creating works with dancers, to date Kurata has collaborated with different people like the residents of drug addiction rehabilitation facilities and elderly people in areas with a chequered history, facing all of them as one person to another, drawing out their innate attractive qualities, and bringing these to fruition on stage. This is a work that fully demonstrates her creative flair and can be regarded as a starting point. The performers who gathered for this production comprise professionals and amateurs; Kurata brings out the radiance in each person's being, despite each having different experiences. She has continued to update the work since it’s premier in 2017, and now finally presents the new version, which was cancelled twice during the pandemic. Without a narrative, in time and space woven purely through the physical appearance of the performers, the existence of the individual human being in his or her natural state is recognized, allowing audiences to witness the reality of “the person” with a clarity that differs from ordinary life.

Profile

akakilike

akakilike is an organization solely consisting of technical staff and Midori Kurata. It principally produces stage works, aiming to always involve production staff and performers on an equal footing. The organization came together on the basis that each person involved establishes and carries out what needs to be done for a work.

Midori Kurata

Born in Mie Prefecture in 1987. Graduated from Kyoto University of Art and Design (now Kyoto University of the Arts), Department of Visual and Performing Arts. She began learning classical and modern ballet at the age of three. She works as a director and dancer based in Kyoto. In each work, she confronts herself and others, and explores the possibilities of “dance” by using the stage structure to create fiction out of the events that occur there. Since 2016, she has presided over “akakilike”, an organization consisting of just her and technical staff, with the aim of involving actors and staff in productions on an equal footing.  She is a Saison Fellow I of the Saison Foundation.
Major works by akakilike include “A Family Photo,” which was first performed in 2016, staged at Aichi Prefectural Art Theater’s Mini Theater Dance Selection 2020, and also featured at the 3rd HOT POT East Asia Dance Platform, a collaborative event by Yokohama Dance Collection, City Contemporary Dance Festival, and Seoul International Dance Festival; “Nice to Meet You, Good Day, Who Am I Today?", which was created together with residents of the Higashi Kujo area of Kyoto and premiered in 2018 as part of Kyoto City’s program “Model projects for building a society where people shine through culture and art,” and which was also selected for the ROHM Theatre Kyoto + Kyoto Art Center KIPPU Under 35 Creative Support Program in 2019; and“Like the summer sea glittering with so many fun things that it is a waste to spend time sleeping, like a green garden flooded with sunlight, like a sky spreading to infinity so clear and blue as to drive you crazy", which was created together with members of Kyoto DARC, a drug addiction rehabilitation center, premiering in 2019 and performed again in 2020 for the Kirari Foundation.
