34th Ikebukuro Play Festival
A unique community-rooted theatre festival!
This year marks the 34th edition of Ikebukuro Play Festival, a theatre festival closely connected with the community and held since 1989. During the month of September, theatre groups who perform in Toshima city are invited to take part, and all prizes including first prize are decided by a jury selected from the general public through an open call. As part of Toshima city’s “TOSHIMA International City of Arts & Culture” scheme, this is a unique community-rooted festival designed to broaden the base of local theatre culture by actualizing the scheme’s aim of developing Toshima city as a theatre-centric district where the streets are a stage, and anyone can play a leading role.
Eve/CM Contest
Eve/CM Contest is a popular feature of the festival involving participating groups giving a brief commercial-style pitch for their entered works. This year’s CM Contest will be held online. Participating groups create an original video of no more than 2 minutes long to promote their festival performance. The videos will be posted in sequence on the Ikebukuro Play Festival YouTube channel every Monday at noon from Monday, August 22 through Monday, September 19 according to performance schedules.
The CM Contest Prize will be decided by the number of views for each video up until noon on Friday, October 7 as well as by jury feedback.
