Let's gather together and make eye contact with people from future!

Scenographer Ayami Sasaki is a member of the theatre group FAIFAI, which continues to present works using a unique collective creation-based approach. For this project set in Toshima’s Otsuka, an area where redevelopment is in full swing, she will be organizing a ceremony for as many people as possible regardless of age or nationality to participate in and witness. Over the three years from 2019, Sasaki has repeatedly visited, stayed in and enjoyed exchange with Otsuka and other neighborhoods through her participation in "Roaming Shopping Street Festival," an art project looking to rediscover the appeal of the area from the perspective of a scenographer. For this project, Sasaki will welcome people who live in the neighborhood, people who commute to work or school there and tourists as participants in the “ceremony.” A temporary structure supported by human hands and local buildings will appear with the cooperation of participants, and group photos will be taken there. By producing photographs showing the changing town and the gaze of people, Sasaki hopes to create an opportunity for encounters that transcend time and space.

Program Directors’comment

This year's FT label offers a program of works designed to make visitors feel the presence of people again; that there are real flesh-and-blood people on the other side of the screen you look at every day, behind the scenes of manufacturing and logistics, and even in buildings that are being destroyed. The artist says that although the act of taking a group photograph involves looking into the lens at a particular moment in time, in fact what they are doing is making eye contact with someone in the future who will someday be looking at that photograph. We hope you will join us in the changing urban landscape to witness this ephemeral ceremony.
