ABOUT

This is a comprehensive urban arts festival held every fall around Tokyo’s Ikebukuro area which aims to connect with the world through Tokyo’s rich and diverse arts and culture scene. While showcasing the appeal of Tokyo’s arts and culture in an easy-to-understand manner, at the same time the festival aims to enhance Tokyo’s own creative capabilities. In the mid-to-long term, we will continue to work on resolving social issues, developing human resources, developing urban areas, and tackling globalization.

This year’s Tokyo Festival will be held over 102 days between September 1 and December 11, principally in the Toshima City and Ikebukuro areas.
We present for your enjoyment a program that includes the overseas production “The Scarlet Princess,” based on Nanboku Tsuruya IV’s “Sakura Hime Azuma Bunsho” and reworked in Romania, as well as a daring reconstruction of the literary classic “Wuthering Heights,” performed outdoors in Ikebukuro Nishi-guchi Park.
Additionally we will also be offering a variety of projects around Toshima City, and Zoom-based international works in collaboration with artists from Asian countries.
Despite the fact that we are in the midst of a rapid succession of unthinkable events including the relentless spread of coronavirus, the threat of war shaking the world, and also an act of violence in Japan that constituted an outrage against democracy, we appreciate your continued support for Tokyo Festival, to assist us in sustaining the flow of cultural exchange around the world.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics was a festival of culture which created a bond between people all over the world. The various cultural programs developed for the Olympics succeeded in creating a diverse cultural legacy to connect with the next generation.
Tokyo Festival, which has been held since 2016, is likewise leading to the creation of a cultural hub generating bustle, activity and exchange by promoting the attractions of Tokyo’s diverse arts and culture to Japan and overseas from the Ikebukuro area of Toshima City.
We may be facing a difficult situation regarding coronavirus, issues with the supply and demand of energy etc., but the arts enliven and energize us. While taking the appropriate safety measures, this festival will present stage works from Japan and overseas which a great number of people can enjoy. We hope that having direct contact with outstanding performing arts will bring joy, excitement, inspiration and the opportunity for new discoveries to the citizens of Tokyo.

Tokyo Festival, which began in 2016, marks its seventh edition this year, and has become established as one of the quintessential events of fall in Toshima City. Under the keywords Opening, Refining, and Connecting, the festival continues to grow through year-on-year upgrading of organization and program content.
This year marks 90 years since Toshima City’s founding, and the beginning of a new era for Toshima City as we head towards its hundredth anniversary under the maxim “learn from yesterday, live for today, bring hope to tomorrow.” In this memorable year, we join many residents in committing to making Toshima City’s identity as an “International City of Arts and Culture” and a “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)- based City of the Future” a reality.
