A documentary about how Christo created a huge public art project

Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude became world-renowned for their mammoth outdoor art projects in which they wrapped entire buildings in fabric and created installations that transformed whole landscapes. Following the death of Jeanne-Claude in 2009, Christo set out to realize a project they had conceived in the 1970s: “The Floating Piers”. His plan was to construct walkways covered with sheets of fabric over a lake in northern Italy so that people could effectively walk on the water—and to do it without any public subsidy or corporate funding. This documentary chronicles the artist as he develops how the project would look, the struggles faced by the organizers in balancing those ideals with reality, and the series of negotiations they had to undertake with authorities and local residents. Full of insights about project-based art, it is a valuable record of their efforts in creating something that otherwise exists now only in people’s memories and a few photographs.
